Before the rib

Before the rib,
         before the man in need of help,
                  before swallows, sperm whales, & cows,

before trees made with seeds
         & pollen released in the breeze,
                  before honey bees & butterflies,

before lavender, azaleas, & lilies,
         inkberry holly & burning bushes,
                  before rain & cumulus clouds,
