Is it the monk God told to run amuck in the fields? Is it the
mother who breastfeeds without a phone? Is it Modesto, the
grocery bagger, who whistles an Andean tune when a white
Peruvian doesn’t see him? Is it the nursemaid who dreams
for children of her own? What of the men who net shrimp
in Lucumo or the wide-eyed child who licks lucuma ice
cream or the Yoruba elders who teach Lucumí? Imagine a
composer who seeks quiet in an apartment of fourteen.
How about the pianist who lays down his tumbao & only
briefly comes to the fore? His cameo underscores the
strange. He helps God arrange three or four seconds to give
us pause & contemplate our bodies in sync.
Who is a Contemplative?
