While the person giving birth has the hardest and most important role, an entire pit crew ideally stands at the ready to assist: a midwife or obstetrician, nurses or assistants, specialists on call in case of emergency, family members cheering over the phone, a faith community sending prayers, someone to deliver pizza when it’s all over.
And most important of all, a birth partner.
