Hyacinth Stevens to lead MCC East Coast
Hyacinth Stevens has been named the executive director of Mennonite Central Committee’s East Coast office. Stevens will replace Bruce Campbell-Janz, who is stepping down after ten years in the role.
For the past seven years, Stevens has worked as MCC’s New York City program coordinator, where she helped the New York Mennonite Immigration Program achieve nonprofit status and Board of Immigration Appeals accreditation.
Stevens is a bishop member-at-large on the conference executive council for LMC, the conservative Mennonite denomination that broke off from Mennonite Church USA in 2018. She is the first woman to hold the position in the denomination. Previously, Stevens spent 12 years as pastor of King of Glory Tabernacle in the Bronx.
In her new role, Stevens will work with East Coast churches to strengthen MCC’s international relief, development, and peacebuilding mission. She will also provide oversight to MCC’s East Coast programs, which are focused on immigration direct services and restorative justice education.
In a statement, Ruth Lesher, MCC East Coast’s board chair, called Stevens a communicator of vision.
“The search committee especially noted Hyacinth’s passionate articulation of our Anabaptist faith and practice in her local churches and community,” she said. “We trust her leadership skills and gift of vision to carry MCC East Coast into the next phase of ministry.”
