Soup & Bread Cookbook, by Martha Bayne

For three winters in a row the Hideout, a Chicago music club, has been holding a weekly Soup & Bread feast. The soups are prepared by both professional and amateur cooks. Day-old bread served with the soup is donated. There is no charge for the simple food, but contributions are welcomed. Each week the proceeds go to a different food pantry. At the time this book was published the program had raised over $13,000. Soup & Bread was the brainchild of food writer Martha Bayne. It occurred to her one wintry night while she was bartending at the Hideout and virtually no one showed up. This book tells how soup brings people together, and it includes recipes. “Soup can be a way to strengthen social ties,” says Bayne.
