In a recent interview for the Century, African Methodist Episcopal bishop Vashti McKenzie spoke to Joan Harrell about her use of social media in ministry as well as her vision for a church focused on social justice. The question [for the church] is not should we speak up... If our voices are not heard, if we do not speak up for people who cannot speak up for themselves, if we do not lend a helping hand, what does that say about the church? Matthew 25.40-45 reminds us, "Truly I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.” Therefore, the church’s voice should not only speak about the injustices that are taking place; there should be voices from the church helping those issues not to occur.
