Outreach, by Malak El-Shazly

In her multimedia collages, Cairo artist Malak El-Shazly layers different mediums—printed text, photographs, paint, and acrylic—in order to create a narrative. She seeks “to experiment with the convergence of the different faces of urban life,” writes El-Shazly. “Life in large cities, like Cairo, is often characterized by struggle and duality. The minds and streets are congested, but there is a constant longing for peace and harmony.” The brightness, the text, and a rhythm of repeated forms and swatches of color lead our eyes to a focal point, a freeze-frame moment of delight, wonder, or hope.
