In June 1933, less than six months after Hitler assumed power in Germany, Karl Barth argued that it was important to do “theology and only theology—as though nothing had happened” (Theological Existence Today). Doing theology in this manner, Barth denounced idolatry in the face of Hitler’s rise to power, pronounced the German Christian movement heretical, formulated much of the Barmen Confession (May 1934) and was fired from his teaching post in Germany.
