Very little about this scene surprises me. The characters are right out of central casting: chief priests, scribes, elders, Jesus, and his silent disciples.

Like the disciples, we’ve missed the point here.
He yearns to be able to lay his case before God.
It is as if every person who asks why bad things happen to good people takes a potsherd and starts scraping.
