Biblical scholar Marcus Borg has been installed as the first canon theologian at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Portland, Oregon. Borg, a popular author and lecturer who retired from Oregon State University in 2007, will give public lectures, teach adult courses and occasionally preach. “Adult theological reeducation at the congregational level is an urgent need within American churches today,” Borg said after his May 31 installation. He has been a parishioner for nearly 20 years at Trinity, where his wife, Marianne, is a priest on the staff.

Dean K. Thompson, who turned 66 this summer, has announced that he will retire as president of Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary in August 2010. Following 31 years as a pastor in Texas, California and West Virginia, Thompson became president of the Kentucky seminary in 2004. During his stay, the school has added five new professors, rotated in 21 new trustees and completed an upgrade to the infrastructure of the 40-year-old campus. “He has guided [us] through significant changes,” said board chairperson Pamela Kidd.
