President Obama’s scheduled May 17 commencement speech at the University of Notre Dame has sparked protests by some Catholics. The local Catholic bishop, John D’Arcy, said he will boycott the event because some Obama policies contradict church teaching.
Evangelical historian MarkNoll, longtime professor at Wheaton College in Illinois, will leave for the University of Notre Dame at the end of this academic year. Noll’s books include The Scandal of the Evangelical Mind, which criticizes evangelicalism’s tendency toward anti-intellectualism, and America’s God: From Jonathan Edwards to Abraham Lincoln.
Groups say Patriot Act being used to stifle academic debate

Highlighting the case of a prominent Muslim scholar barred from a tenured post at Notre Dame, the ACLU and three other groups, including the large American Academy of Religion, have filed a federal lawsuit seeking to strike down a USA Patriot Act clause they say is applied wrongly to stifle academic debate.
