Brevard Childs, one of the leading Old Testament scholars of the 20th century and a biblical theologian of international renown, continued to publish major new works right up until his death on June 23. His magnum opus was undoubtedly Biblical Theologyof the Old and New Testaments (Fortress, 1993).
Brevard S. Childs, 83, an influential Old Testament scholar who was known for his work in biblical theology and taught at Yale Divinity School for 41 years, died June 23 in New Haven, Connecticut. He died of complications from injuries sustained in a fall at his home.
Since the publication of his Biblical Theology in Crisis in 1970, Brevard Childs (recently retired from Yale Divinity School) has pursued a single-minded interpretive agenda with passion and imagination: that the legitimate interpretation of the Bible is as the scripture of the church.
