The American Baptist Churches in the U.S.A. has announced that a feared recall of missionaries will not happen in 2005. Last summer, American Baptist leaders said they needed to close a $1.5 million budget gap to prevent the recall.
The American Baptist Churches in the USA has reported the fastest growth of any Protestant denomination, according to the 2004 Yearbook of American and Canadian Churches, which compiled figures for the end of 2002 from some 215 different denominations in the two countries. The American Baptists showed a gain for the second consecutive year after two previous years of decline.
Leaders of the American Baptist Churches in the USA and the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship say they are excited about potential opportunities for formal dialogue with other U.S. Christians, including Catholics, Orthodox, mainline Protestants, evangelicals and Pentecostals in the fledgling Christian Churches Together in the USA.
